On Sports

“Well,” I said, “if they hadn’t got a new arena, they might have left for some other city.”

“If it’s necessary to spend public money on sports teams,” Mr. Magundi replied, “then we should just admit that they’re public services, like street-sweeping or garbage collection, and make them branches of the government. Think how turnout would improve in municipal elections if we had to pick a new pitcher on the ballot, or if our star quarterback were up for reelection. And don’t tell me that private enterprise is more efficient at running a sports team. Private enterprise is clearly completely incompetent in this area. If the private organizations we have now were any good at all, they wouldn’t have to ask the government for another half-billion dollars every few years.”
